Formerly uber-Christian cartooni= st Dan Lacey used to draw a religious cartoon with such messages as "aborti= on is bad, yo" and "fuck the liberals!= " but coupled with psychotic symbolism that a schizophrenic couldn't make s= ense of. And then he went crazy.

Now he draws the same comic with essentially the same message, except now= Gay Bear fantasizes of having sex with Jesus and one of the female characters named Taint masturbated with a huge butt plug while dreaming of Barack Obama.

Faithmouse used to be (i= n my opinion) a very dry, predictable, uninspired political strip that parroted neo-conservative, fundamentalist Christian values without offering anythi= ng in the way of insight or analysis on the behalf of its creator (Dan Lacey= ). He bashed the ACLU (even when it was repeatedly pointed out to him they frequently went to bat for religious freedom), bought into the "acti= vist judges" and "War on Christmas" panics (the primary antagon= ist in both being a lesbian pagan judge with a buzzcut), and had a character that was an aborted fetus, Never= born. He also had that ridiculous but all-too-common habit of depicting American Christians as under siege and mercilessly persecuted, despite the fact th= ese strips were done during the most frothing, fervent days of the Bush administration. Back then, Faithmouse, for me, vacillated between banal and sneering, neither of which made it worth reading.

But a while back, I can't really pinpoint when, Dan started experimenting with the strip in completely unpredictable ways. He introduced a character called Gaybear, a gay Christian bear who got = hard-ons for Christ. Then Poot, a giant walking ass who ate things, then shat them out broken and wasted. (Consumerism?) His comics always had a slight problem with being indecipherable, because he was so preoccupied with the symbolism of every= thing he drew; he eventually stopped caring about making the things accessible = at all. His shit seriously went Dada for a while. It was extraordinary.

He has a new character, Taint, who is an evil Faithm= ouse. (Made even more interesting by the fact that Faithmo= use is basically Dan's wife in mouse form.) Taint is pregnant and wants an abortion, constantly naked, has a huge stable of intimidating sex toys, w= orks at a strip club (or as the cigarette girl in a casino), and is covered in tattoos and piercings. Dan really likes drawi= ng her. A lot. Sometimes masturbating.

I don't think concepts really matter. When stated plainly as= a concept nothing really sounds interesting. If you want early criticism, w= ork out an actual comic idea: not an outline of what you plan to do, but an actual scene or chapter. A concept could be taken in a million different = directions and turn out awesome no matter how retarded it initially sounds, so it's better to show people what you're actually going to do with it if you want criticism.

This sounds like excellent advice, and I= 'm going to start making something of it right now.

One of the most unusual and most delightful web sites around, Faithmouse.com is sure to become one of your favorites. There you'll meet a creative conservative Christian artist who has mixed the best of Bill Buckley and Bugs Bunny to come up with a great new hero whose comments on contemporary culture are of great value.' ~Denny Hartford, = Vital Signs Ministries

&nb= sp;

I first encountered Faithmouse at Men's News Daily. At f= irst I didn't get much of it, but eventually, with the help of the blog I figured out what was going on and now find it quite informative. I am an atheist, b= ut I try hard not to be a jerk about it. Even when I disagree with a given carto= on (or series or them,) I find the faith expressed touching and the artistic talent impressive. I wish I had either, but since I have neither, I simply enjoy the cartoons for what they are: one man's remarkable statement of fai= th in an indifferent world.
Good luck always, Faithmouse.~emailer John Q <= /o:p>

Dan Lacey over at Faithmouse gave me a nice plug last we= ek. A lot like a lot of military chaplains, I happen to enjoy reading Dan's com= ic. I've said this before, but the negative reactions Faithm= ouse receives are both staggering and hilarious. How can anyone possibly get so upset over such a harmless, happy cartoon?

This is a simple question for you:Your "cartoon", Faith Mouse....I don= 't get it. It doesn't seem like an editorial cartoon to me. See, editorial cartoons usually attempt to argue a point (And generally are funny in doing so.), bu= t I see very little of that going on. Your cartoons seem to only say "Prai= se God" or "Dubya's Great", which i= s alright (Not by MY standards though) but it's not enough to just SAY it without bac= king it up. (Also there's the inherent lack of humor in this thing....I don't get it.) Sincerely (Not really), JnvRe= no
P.S.
In THIS:http://www.faithmouse.com/ed= 11toon.jpg : Cartoon, you feature a picture of a Flaming Lips poster. Just a question, what do you intend to infer by this? Are you saying the Flaming L= ips aren't good? Because they are better than everything else in the mainstream radio these days. ~emailer = Just Curious.

&nb= sp;

Hello again, Dan... Been a brief while since I wrote -- there's a whole lot of activity in this world of ours lately. The pictures = from Fallujah, the death of Pat Tillman, the al-Qaida bombings in Madrid, the continuing chaos in Afghanistan (largely dwarfed by the war in Iraq), the pictures from Abu Ghraib, the footage of Nick Berg's execution, the bet= rayal of state secrets by Mr. Chalabi, the apparent sanctioning of prisoner torture by our own leaders... this insanity seems t= o go on and on and on without a pit stop, doesn't it? And it required the death = of Ronald Reagan to take our minds off of all that. Up front: The main reason = I'm writing again concerns the 6-6-04 entry of faithmouse in ComicsSherpa. So far, it's the best memorial to Reagan I've seen. There's a whole lot of utter nonsense emanating from both Reagan's harshest detractors and his doe-eyed fans these days, and your modest entry transcends all of that. Goo= d -- I'm glad I saw it. Personal observation: I'm not a Reagan fan -- I think th= at plenty of what his critics have to say is true -- but I recognize greatness when I see it. Compared to George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan looks like Patton,= and the closest we have to a Patton these days is Colin Powell -- and the way h= e's been treated is a crying shame...) The downside: Reagan will be fittingly memorialized and respectfully laid to rest, as he should be. But the morning after... well, we'll be rejoining the living. And many of the living seem t= o be intractably pissed. I'm not sure they don't have the right to be. ~email fr= om JY
